Program Description
The Arkansas Fire Training Academy (AFTA) is a division of Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech). This relationship allows additional education opportunities for students who complete training through the AFTA.
AFTA students are able to receive college credit for the courses that make up this certificate of proficiency (CP) by enrolling in these courses for college credit through SAU Tech at the time that the courses are taken through the AFTA. Upon successful completion of the courses, the student will be awarded the EMS Driver/Operator Certificate of Proficiency. Theses courses may be applied toward the Fire & Emergency Response Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree.
Note: This certificate of proficiency (CP) will not be awarded to students who completed the courses that make up this CP prior to fall 2022. However, if a student started the sequence of courses included in this CP prior to fall 2022 and finished after fall 2022, he/she can be awarded this CP.
Residency Requirement
The student is required to complete a minimum of 15 semester hours in residence at SAU Tech for associate degrees and technical certificates and half of the credit hours required for certificates of proficiency as well as complete all other graduation requirements. Students who wish to pursue additional degrees must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of difference between the degrees.
AFTA Students Only: In the case where an AFTA student has not taken any classes from SAU Tech, completion of the nine (9) hours for Standards School satisfies the SAU Tech residency requirement for the Fire & Emergency Response Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree, Fire Science Management Associate of Science (A.S.) degree and embedded certificates of proficiency and technical certificates for these degrees.
